Purdue-SIU basketball preview

The Purdue Boilermakers open their 2017-18 season at home against SIU-Edwardsville at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 10.

Purdue is going into its 13th season led by coach Matt Painter. Painter is 265-142 as the Boilermakers’ coach, leading the program to the Sweet 16 three times, including last season. Purdue went 27-8 in 2016-17 and won the Big Ten regular season title by going 14-4.

The Boilermakers played two exhibition games leading up to the season opener. They beat Indiana State, 94-72, and Carroll College (Mont.), 98-71. Carsen Edwards led the team in scoring, averaging 17 points per game. Vincent Edwards (13.5), Isaac Haas (13.5), Dakota Mathis (10.5) and Matt Haarms (10) also averaged double figures in scoring. Under Painter’s leadership, the Boilermakers are 24-0 in exhibition games, winning them by an average of 25.9 points per game.

Painter is 11-1 with Purdue in season openers. As a program, the Boilermakers are 98-21. Painter is also 40-2 in November home games with the Boilermakers.

Senior Vincent Edwards was one of 50 players named to the Naismith Award watch list. Edwards, who’s a 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward, was Third Team All-Big Ten as a junior. He’s the only active player in the country with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists.

After playing SIU-Edwardsville, Purdue next plays in the Battle 4 Atlantis home game against Chicago State. That game is set for 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 12 and will be on the Big Ten Network. After that, the Boilermakers play at Marquette (8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14) and at home against Fairfield (7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18).

The Boilermakers signed three recruits for the 2018 class.

Emmanuel Dowuona, Trevion Williams and Eric Hunter Jr. have all signed with the Boilermakers.

“We are really excited about signing Emmanuel, Eric and Trevion. We are fortunate to sign very talented players that have huge upside,” Painter said in an official release. “All three players are great people and great teammates, love playing basketball, fit our culture and will make a big impact on our program moving forward. All three of these players have the potential to be all-Big Ten during their careers here.”

Dowuona is a 6-foot-11, 225-pound center from Miami, Fla. Hunter is a 6-foot-3 guard from Indianapolis. Williams is a 6-foot-9 forward from Chicago.
