Rutgers-CCNY basketball: Preview

Rutgers basketball plays its first regular season game for the 2017-18 season on Friday, Nov. 10. The Scarlet Knights are play CCNY, who is from the City University of New York Athletic Conference which competes in Division III.

The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 15-18 season in 2016-17 and went 3-15 in Big Ten play. The team started last season with a 6-0 record, but went 9-18 the rest of the way.

Last season was also Steve Pikiell’s first as the coach of the team. Pikiell came from Stony Brook, where he went 192-157 during his time there. Over his final five seasons at Stony Brook, Pikiell accumulated a 119-48 record.

Over those five years, Pikiell’s Stony Brook teams made two CBI tournaments, two NIT tournaments and one NCAA Tournament. With it being Pikiell’s second season at Rutgers, the hope is that the team came improve upon its last place finish in the Big Ten from a year ago.

Rutgers junior guard Corey Sanders returns from a year ago when he led the team in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Outside of Sanders, the Scarlet Knights have no players returning from last season’s group that averaged at least 12 points or 3 assists per game.

The Scarlet Knights have an incoming freshman class that features three 3-star players — according to 247Sports — as well as a player who re-classified to play for the team this season in Mamadou Doucoure. Doucoure is a 6-foot-9, 220-pound center who, by 247Sports, was ranked as a 4-star prospect for the Class of 2018 before re-classifying.

For CCNY, the Beavers have a first-year coach in Paul Dail. The Beavers went 17-10 overall a year ago and did not make the Division III postseason tournament.

The Beavers had four players from last season that averaged at least 12.8 points per game, but its fifth-highest scorer averaged 5.4. Of the top-four scorers, none of them return for the 2017-18 season.

Those four were also the team’s top-four rebounders as well. The Beavers’ top-four players in assists are also gone from last year’s team.
