What Archie Miller said after Indiana’s season-opening 90-69 loss to Indiana State

Archie Miller’s debut as head coach at Indiana did not go well, to say the least.

The Hoosiers fell 90-69 to in-state opponent Indiana State to open the season. Indiana simply had no answer on defense against the Sycamores, who made 17 three-pointers, the most ever by a Hoosiers opponents. Guards Jordan Barnes and Brenton Scott combined for 42 points, while Indiana’s starting guards put up just 18 points total.

Miller spoke to reporters after the game and pulled no punches with Indiana’s preparedness and effort level.

Archie Miller: "Indiana State was ready. Indiana wasn't."

— Mike Miller (@MikeMillerHT) November 11, 2017

#iubb coach Archie Miller: "From our standpoint, obviously really disappointed for our fans. Really disappointed for all the positive things that happened around here for such a long time. Wasn't the start we hoped for, but it's reality."

— Stu Jackson (@StuJTH) November 11, 2017

Miller: "You're seeing a team that's having to play a new way, and they don't know to win this way." #iubb

— Chris Goff (@CgoffJG) November 11, 2017

Miller: "When we're not in transition, we struggle. It's an unsure team of when to pass, shoot, dribble. When you have that, you're gonna have wasted possessions. We're a hodgepodge. I have to do a better job of teaching."

— Mike Miller (@MikeMillerHT) November 11, 2017

Miller: "It starts with me. I have to do a better job. I have to get these guys more confidence in what they're doing." #iubb

— Stu Jackson (@StuJTH) November 11, 2017

Archie Miller: "It’s reality, and I think that’s the great thing about it. You have to address the things, good and bad, that you need to get better at." #iubb

— Zach Osterman (@ZachOsterman) November 11, 2017

Miller on Indiana State backcourt of Jordan Barnes and Brenton Scott: "Those two guys can really play. They got cooking. They gave everybody confidence."

— Chris Goff (@CgoffJG) November 11, 2017

Miller said he saw communication issues, lack of awareness in Indiana's defensive breakdowns tonight. #iubb

— Stu Jackson (@StuJTH) November 11, 2017

Archie: "We’re soft. We’re just a soft team. You don’t have to sugarcoat it at all." #iubb

— Zach Osterman (@ZachOsterman) November 11, 2017

Archie Miller with a follow-up to the "soft" quote: "I sort of mean not physically soft, not incapable, I think it’s more of a resolve, a mental toughness that we have to go harder, we have to play stronger, we have to get the job done." #iubb

— Zach Osterman (@ZachOsterman) November 11, 2017

Hoosiers coach Archie Miller: "It wasn't the effort level we're accustomed to." #iubb

— Chris Goff (@CgoffJG) November 11, 2017

Miller on Collin Hartman: "Timetable undetermined. The day before the game he tweaks his groin. I expect him to be out a long period of time. I feel bad for him." #iubb

— Chris Goff (@CgoffJG) November 11, 2017

Miller on how he addresses the loss with the players: "Tell the truth, make no excuses and move on." #iubb
