Wisconsin 85, South Carolina State 50 (FINAL): Ethan Happ finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Badgers, which isn’t much a surprise considering his talent and experience. The Badgers won this game handily because of a size, skill and strength advantage. Andy Van Vliet, Brevin Pritzl and D’Mitrik Trice combined to bury 10 3-pointers.
Wisconsin 78, South Carolina State 50 (2:30, 2nd): Four different Wisconsin players have scored in double figures, which is certainly an encouraging sign for the Badgers. Ethan Happ has 20 points, Andy Van Vliet 18, Brevin Pritzl 15 and D’Mitrik Trice 13. Considering Happ was the only returning player who averaged more than 6 points per game last season, this is just the type of start to the season Wisconsin needed.
Wisconsin 68, South Carolina State 47 (7:17, 2nd): The Badgers are pulling away now behind the strength of Ethan Happ and Andy Van Vliet. Happ has a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Van Vliet just buried back-to-back 3-pointers and is up to 16 points. Brevin Pritzl has 12 points. South Carolina State hung around into the second half, but Wisconsin is too big and talented to be uncomfortable tonight.
Wisconsin 57, South Carolina State 45 (11:09, 2nd): Wisconsin hasn’t been able to put away South Carolina State yet, but Ethan Happ is doing his best to make it happen. Happ converts a layup and is fouled as we head into the media timeout. He now has 17 points and 9 rebounds. He is shooting an efficient 7 of 9 from the field. Freshman guard Kobe King scored the first points of his college career in the second half.
Wisconsin 50, South Carolina State 34 (15:54, 2nd): Ethan Happ continues to put on a show in the first game of his junior season. he leads the Badgers with 15 points and 8 rebounds. The Badgers are winning handily because they have been dominant in the post, where they have a 22-2 advantage on points in the paint.
Wisconsin 46, South Carolina State 29 (Halftime): Ethan Happ has 12 points, while Andy Van Vliet and Brevin Pritzl each 10 points apiece in a half that saw a balanced scoring effort from Wisconsin. D’Mitrik Trice added 8 points.
Wisconsin 35, South Carolina State 23 (3:55, 1st): Wisconsin is beginning to impose its will on South Carolina State. The Badgers demonstrated during their two exhibition games that they have enough scorers to ensure opponents can’t simply double-team Ethan Happ when he touches the ball. We’re seeing more of that here in the first half.
Wisconsin 31, South Carolina State 20 (7:02, 1st): Brevin Pritzl and D’Mitrik Trice have been impressive offensively for the Badgers. Pritzl scored on a smooth drive to the basket after a shot fake from the top of the key. Trice has 8 points and already has connected on 2 3-pointers.
Wisconsin 17, South Carolina State 12 (11:52, 2nd): A little sloppy for the Badgers with freshmen guards Kobe King and Brad Davison into the game. Davison misses a pair of 3-pointers, and King travels. Probably a bit of nerves for those two, who checked in to officially begin their college careers. Both are going to be tremendous players for Wisconsin. The Badgers have connected on 7 of 13 field goals. Ethan Happ and Brevin Pritzl each have 7 points.

Wisconsin 14, South Carolina State 7 (15:21, 1st): A pretty entertaining first few minutes at the Kohl Center. Badgers forward Ethan Happ has been excellent. He converted layups on back-to-back spin moves in the post, finished a nice layup in transition and dished a sweet pass to forward Aleem Ford for a dunk. Happ has 6 points, while guard Brevin Pritzl has 5.
5:33 p.m.: One of the bigger storylines entering Wisconsin’s season opener tonight was whether freshman center Nate Reuvers would redshirt. Reuvers, along with Walt McGrory are still deciding whether they will redshirt. Reuvers could help the Badgers this season, but he doesn’t have guaranteed minutes with so many teammates in the frontcourt.
Wisconsin freshmen Nate Reuvers and Walt McGrory will not suit up for tonight's game.
Both remain undecided on their long-term redshirting plans.

Wisconsin has finished in the top four of the Big Ten regular season in each of the last 16 seasons. But many pundits believe that streak could come to an end this season. In a preseason vote of 28 media members who cover the conference, the Badgers were picked to finish seventh.
The Badgers’ team dynamic will change in 2017-18 now that Bronson Koenig, Nigel Hayes, Zak Showalter and Vitto Brown are gone. Those four stalwarts combined to play an astounding 547 college games with 349 starts. They accounted for 55.9 percent of the minutes played last season, 59.7 percent of the points, 41.5 percent of the rebounds and 54.6 percent of the assists. Hayes finished third in school history in scoring (1,857 points), and Koenig set the program’s career 3-point record (270).
Wisconsin’s only returning starter is forward Ethan Happ, who averaged 14.0 points and 9.0 rebounds last season and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. Happ flourished as a redshirt sophomore, but he also had enough talent around him to take pressure of him needing to be the best player on the floor every game.
D’Mitrik Trice will assume the starting point guard role previously occupied by Koenig. Trice averaged 5.6 points per game last season, while forward Khalil Iverson averaged 3.9 points. No other returning player averaged more than 2.2 points per game. Included in that group are forward Charlie Thomas (2.2 points), Brevin Pritzl. Pritzl (1.9), Andy Van Vliet (1.3) and Alex Illikainen (1.3).
Those four returning players, along with redshirt freshman Aleem Ford, will be vying for playing time. And each of them will have to demonstrate marked improvement to excel through the grind of a Big Ten campaign.
Wisconsin defeated Northern Iowa 69-38 in an exhibition game Wednesday night and showed that it has several offensive weapons available outside of Happ. Freshman guard Kobe King scored a team-high 15 points, Happ added 9 points and Iverson 9 points. Eight different players made at least one 3-pointer for the Badgers, who connected on 10 of 24 long-range tries overall.
King and Brad Davison are freshmen guards who will see plenty of playing time off the bench. Wisconsin’s bigger questions could come in the frontcourt. Van Vliet earned a start against Northern Iowa but scored only 2 points in 15 minutes. Ford showcased a nice outside touch by drilling two 3-pointers. Freshman center Nate Reuvers scored 6 points late in the game, and Thomas finished with 5 points.
During Wisconsin’s 85-56 exhibition victory against UW-Stout on Sunday night, King again led the team in scoring with 17 points. Davison added 13 points, while Iverson and Van Vliet scored 11 points apiece.
