Dayton Flyers react: ‘Having someone who knows what it’s like playing here is a big deal’

A week ago, the University of Dayton men’s basketball team was coming to grips with losing its coach Archie Miller to the Indiana Hoosiers - a loss that sent shock waves through the university and college basketball.

A week later the Flyers were meeting their new coach, Anthony Grant.

For Ryan Mikesell, the St. Henry High School grad who grew up watching UD, Grant being a former player brings dividends.

“I was too young to watch him play,” Mikesell said, “but for me personally, growing up around here, I was a Dayton fan. Having someone who understands what it’s like to play in this program is a big deal to us.”

The Flyers are losing four of their five top scorers next season - an obstacle they were going to need to hurdle under Miller if Dayton wanted to return to the NCAA tournament for a fifth consecutive year. With a new coach, it means getting to know each other first.

“That will come with experience,” Mikesell said. “Being with him every day, you have to trust him and trust in his system.”
