Everyone has opinion on Ohio State quarterback situation

Recruit draws criticism for comment about Haskins

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett had to hear the talk all week, even if he kept his ears covered by those Beats by Dre headphones LeBron James gave to the team three seasons ago before the national championship game.

Everyone had something to say about whether Ohio State should stick with its fifth-year senior starter in the next game Saturday against Army or give one of the younger quarterbacks a chance. Even recruits considering Ohio State couldn’t resist letting the world know their thoughts on Twitter.

“They need to put in my bro (Dwayne Haskins) and let him work,” wrote Jackson Carman, a senior at Fairfield High School.

The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Carman is a five-star recruit, the top-ranked recruit in Ohio in the 2018 class, according to 247Sports.com, and the No. 1 offensive tackle in the country.

Carman attended Ohio State’s game against Oklahoma on Sept. 9, along with numerous recruits, and watched the offense struggle all night in a 31-16 loss. His Tweet set off a chain reaction of reactions and then reactions to those reactions.

“Can someone get a memo to ALL RECRUITS of EVERY SCHOOL,” ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit wrote, “to please keep quiet and worry about their own teams. Not a good look for these guys.”

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said Monday he was aware of Carman’s comment. Center Billy Price urged recruits on Tuesday to leave those type of comments to the coaches and players inside the program.

“Until you are a part of this program and you put the work in just as much as these other guys have,” Price said, “your opinion and some of your voices don’t need to be heard.”

Meanwhile, the Centerville grad and former Buckeye Herbstreit went back and forth with Carman on Twitter.

“Pretty sure I wouldn’t have any problems in Dabo Swinney’s or Clay Helton’s locker room for my OPINION on OSU’s qb issues,” Carman wrote.
