Football prospects could be able to sign early per new rule proposal

An early signing period for college football took a step toward reality Wednesday at the American Football Coaches Association convention.

Per USA Today, AFCA members voted to recommend senior prospects be allowed to sign national letters of intent on the third Wednesday in December, when junior-college prospects are allowed to sign now.

The new early signing date would be in addition to the current signing period, which begins on the first Wednesday in February.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer vehemently opposed an early signing period when it was a topic of conversation earlier this year, but at that time talk was of allowing players to sign during the summer.

Among his concerns then was not being able to see prospects play their senior seasons before college decisions are locked in.

The early signing period is not the new law of the land yet.

The coaches’ recommendation will be forwarded to the NCAA’s Football Oversight Committee for consideration next week.
