USGA 36-hole Sectional events in Ohio will be held on June 6 at Springfield Country Club and at Wedgewood Golf & Country Club and Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club in Powell. The U.S. Open is June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh.
Last week we reported that Randy Leen, formerly of Centerville, and Wittenberg University grad Ben Hogenkamp have advanced to the sectional round.
The co-medalists in Cincinnati were Connor Yakubov of Columbus and Chad Howard of Dublin, both of whom shot 69. Nine players advanced.
Four players turned in 72s and were in a playoff for two alternate positions. Shawn Taylor of Clay City, Ky., and UD golfer Brendan Keating of Cincinnati finished 1-2. The others were Andy Mayhew and Michael Roberts.
Seven players with local ties were among the 14 who qualified for the Ohio Amateur Championship in an 18-hole competition at Country Club of the North on Monday.
Christopher Reese of Cedarville and Ryan Reichley of Xenia were co-medalists with even par 72s. Alex Flick, a sophomore at Beavercreek High School, and Luke Wells of Springfield shot 73.
Austin Sipe of Centerville, a member of the Wright State University golf team who was medalist in the 2015 qualifier, will be returning to the Ohio Am after posting a 74. Austin Greaser, a freshman at Vandalia-Butler High School, got in with a 75 and Austin Wells of Dayton qualified with a 76.
The Ohio Am will be held July 12-16 at Findlay Country Club.
Three players from the Dayton area were exempt from qualifying from the Ohio Am as a result of their top 20 finishes in the 2015 event at Zanesville Country Club. Clark Engle of Springfield, a member of the Ohio State University golf team, finished third. Jeff Scohy, the current Ohio Mid-Amateur champion, tied for 20th as did Alec Tahy, who first made the field in 2008 when he was 13 years old.
Tahy just finished his third year at the University of Arkansas but has two years of eligibility remaining. Arkansas is ranked No. 21 in the country and Tahy has been unable to crack the lineup. He played in only three of the team’s 11 events this year.
Xenia course to hold
30th junior golf Camp
WGC Golf Course at Xenia is preparing to hold its 30th annual Miami Valley Junior Golf Association camp for boys and girls ages 8-17.
Jim Beaver, the longtime camp director, reports that the four-day camp will be in session June 20-23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Campers will receive daily instruction on stroke technique, golf etiquette and the rules of golf.
Beaver, who formerly coached at Stebbins High School, heads a staff that includes PGA pros Garay Goecke and Travis Mumma and several high school coaches. Details are available at www.wgcgolfcourse.com under the MVJGA tab.
Chip Shots
The deadline for entering the annual Ohio Junior World Championship at NCR Country Club is May 24. The tournament, which in the past was held on the Monday of U.S. Open week, has been moved up a week. The date is May 31.
A few walking scorers are needed for the afternoon round of the U.S. Open Sectional qualifier at Springfield Country Club on June 6.
The annual Get A Girl Golfing event will be held on June 20 at Rollandia. It is sponsored by the Dayton District Women’s Golf Association.
