Grant calls Dayton’s fourth victory a ‘team win’

Flyers 4-4 after 13-point win vs. Tennessee Tech

Tennessee Tech brought a roster that ranks third in the country in experience to UD Arena. The Dayton Flyers rank 305th out of 351 teams.

In the battle of age versus youth Wednesday, the young guys came out on top. Dayton evened its record at 4-4 with a 79-66 victory. The Flyers led for the last 33 minutes and never let the Golden Eagles get closer than seven points in the second half.

“It was a great team win for us,” Dayton coach Anthony Grant said. “For a team like ours, as young as they are, you look at veterans and the way they play. I challenged our guys before the game. We need to understand what we’re up against, the different things we’re going to see. I thought our guys did a really good job.”

Darrell Davis led Dayton with 19 points. Josh Cunningham had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kostas Antetokounmpo had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Landers and Jordan Davis each scored 14 points.

“For the most part, our guys controlled the game,” Grant said. “You look at 22 assists. I really like seeing five guys in double figures, sharing the basketball, making each other better. Our team is progressing. we still want to get better, but tonight was a step in that direction.”

Tennessee Tech (7-3) averaged 84.7 points in its first nine games and made 8.2 3-pointers per game while shooting 37.6 percent from long range. The Golden Eagles made 10 of 24 3-pointers (41.7 percent) against Dayton but shot 12 of 28 inside the arc (42.8 percent).

Dayton shot 34.8 percent from 3-point range (8 of 23) and 23 of 31 from 2-point range (74.2 percent). The Flyers outscored the Golden Eagles 40-20 in the paint. Dayton had seven dunks.

“The guys were driving,” Cunningham said, “and they were able to dish it off to me and Kostas and other players. We just wanted to finish at the rim.”
