Hartsock: Piqua starts season with extra motivation

Talk about your frustrating finish to last season. Nobody had it worse than the Piqua Indians.

Bill Nees thought his team had earned a spot in the Division III playoffs, only to have it taken away when Dunbar forfeited its final two games of the season to jumble the playoff field.

“We had a 7-3 year and it was a season we felt we qualified for the playoffs,” Nees said. “We were playing very good football at that point…and we felt coming out that we would be a contender in week eleven … Unfortunately we didn’t get that opportunity.”

The Indians lost to arch-rival Troy in Week 10 which didn’t help their cause, but this is a group that definitely starts the season with a chip on their shoulders.

“Definitely, all the guys from last year have some extra motivation to come back this year,” senior Ben Schmeising said. “We’ve got some guys who know what they’re doing and some guys who can help the younger guys who are very talented.

Schmeising might be the most talented of the bunch in Piqua. The Indians will look to his leadership on both sides of the ball.

Ironically, Piqua opens its season against another Dayton City League team, although Meadowdale had nothing to do with the issues that ended last season.

The Indians will get a good barometer before the GWOC season starts. They follow the opener with back-to-back home games against Trotwood and Franklin.
