Kyle Davis, Josh Cunningham making progress for UD

The Dayton Flyers still haven’t played a game at full strength this season. They never will if you consider the loss of Steve McElvene, whose death in May robbed the team of its most dominant shot-blocking force.

Dayton beat Saint Louis 67-46 on Sunday at UD Arena with senior guard Kyle Davis on the bench. He missed his second straight game with a sprained ankle and bruised foot. Coach Archie Miller sounded confident Davis, who wore a boot on his ankle Thursday but not on Sunday, would play in the next game at 9 p.m. Friday at Virginia Commonwealth.

“He’s coming along slowly but surely,” Miller said. “Hopefully, tomorrow we’ll get him on the court and have him move around a little bit more and see what he can handle. He’s better than what he was on Wednesday. I’m hoping with a longer week he can ease into it, and hopefully we can have him available because it would be nice to have our full group at some point.”

Cunningham update: Dayton's other injured player, sophomore forward Josh Cunningham, continues to make progress. He hasn't played since tearing a ligament in his ankle in the second game of the season Nov. 15 at Alabama.

“Josh has done an excellent job with his rehabilitation,” Miller said. “I could see him starting to do some on-court work. Conditioning is the biggest thing, being out as long as he has. His ankle is great. His body is good. He’s taken care of himself His deal will be confidence getting back, but as the end of January approaches, he’s ahead of schedule in terms of just getting his body back on the floor and moving around.”

Cunningham intends to play again this season, Miller said. The original timetable called for Cunningham to miss three months, which meant he could return for the final five games of the regular season.

“If Josh is available to play at some point this season and for us to use him, he would have to be really looking good and being able to practice full go,” Miller said. “We would never put him out there if he was 75 or 80 percent. Josh’s mentality is he will play again this season. I think that’s why his rehab is going well.”

Next game: Dayton will play at VCU's Siegel Center on Friday for the first time since 2015 when they recorded their biggest regular-season victory of the season, beating the Rams 59-55.

Fordham (9-11, 3-4) upset VCU 69-67 Wednesday. VCU (15-5, 5-2) bounced back Sunday by beating La Salle 90-52 in the most lopsided A-10 game this season.
