Kyle Davis: ‘Not 100 percent’ but feeling great

Dayton senior returns after missing two games with injury

The Dayton Flyers lost to Virginia Commonwealth with senior guard Kyle Davis running around just as he was a few weeks ago. It’s hard to imagine where they would have been without him.

Davis returned to action Friday after missing two games with a sprained ankle and bruised foot, playing 25 minutes in a 73-68 loss at the Siegel Center.

“I was happy to have him back,” Dayton coach Archie Miller said. “I don’t think there were any setbacks. As we get ready to go here, we have our full arsenal of players available. It’s the best we can do.

Davis scored nine points on 3-of-4 shooting and added three assists, two rebounds and two steals.

“I’m feeling great right now,” Davis said after the game. “I’m not 100 percent, but I’m feeling great. At shootaround today, coach (Archie Miller) told me to give it a go. I’ve been sitting out. I’m been doing rehab with Mike (Mulcahey). He got me ready for tonight. It felt good out there.”

MORE ON GAME: Dayton overwhelmed in final minutes

Davis hadn’t missed a game since his freshman season. It was no fun sitting on the bench as his teammates beat Richmond and Saint Louis.

“It was very hard. I didn’t want to miss them,” Davis said. “But I didn’t want to step out on the court and hurt myself and hurt my team even more, so I had to bite the bullet and sit out.”

Davis played top-notch defense throughout the game, even blocking a 3-pointer in the first half. The Flyers frustrated VCU in the second half, too. The Rams scored three points during a six-minute stretch. However, during the decisive 11-1 run by VCU, the Flyers had several defensive breakdowns that led to easy baskets for VCU.

“It’s a little frustrating, but we know this game is full of runs and comebacks,” Davis said.
