A University of Dayton grad, Coombs is in his sixth season coaching defensive backs at Ohio State.
Before that, he spent five seasons as an assistant at the University of Cincinnati, but more than half of his professional career has been spent in the high school ranks — most notably 16 years as head coach at GMC powerhouse Colerain in Cincinnati.
Having sent many players to Division I schools when he was a prep coach and now having spent 10 seasons on the other side as a recruiter, he has a unique perspective.
Like Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer, Coombs also knows what it is like to be the parent of a football player in Ohio looking to be recruited.
Meyer has previously talked publicly about the need for more opportunities to evaluate prospects in Ohio, where recruits may be at a disadvantage compared to their peers in states that do have spring football.
