Ohio State Buckeyes have four walk-ons from Dayton area

Ke’Von Huguely grew up a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. He never envisioned playing for them.

The Meadowdale High School graduate joined the program as a walk-on running back in the fall of 2015 and plans to play for the Buckeyes for three more seasons. Huguely could have played Division II or III football but had already decided to attend Ohio State, where he had a full scholarship, when he got an email from Greg Gillum, who was then Ohio State’s director of football operations.

Gillum invited Huguely to walk on to the team. Before he knew it, Huguely was running out of the tunnel at Ohio Stadium with the rest of the Buckeyes and playing with the same unit that featured Ezekiel Elliott.

“It was amazing,” Huguely said Sunday at Ohio State Media Day. “My first time being in an airplane was for the Fiesta Bowl. The first time I was ever at a college game was at (Ohio Stadium). The experience was unbelievable.”

Huguely was Meadowdale’s MVP as a senior in 2014 and a first-team All-City League wide receiver. He’s majoring in criminology at Ohio State.

At Ohio State, his role is to help the defense get ready for that week’s opponent.

“Of course, I don’t play, so I feel like every practice is my game,” Huguely said. “I try to give the defense a look. If the first or second string need me at different positions if people go down in camp, they tell me what to do and I just go.”

Huguely has seen the development of Mike Weber, who’s expected to be the starting running back as a redshirt freshman.

“Weber’s attitude changed,” Huguely said. “He’s become more mature. He’s more serious and more focused because he’s next.”

Huguely is one of four walk-ons from the Dayton area on the roster.

• Cornerback Cin’Quan Haney, a Chaminade Julienne grad, enters his second season on the roster.

• Tight end Derrick Malone, a Thurgood Marshall grad, also joined the team in the fall of 2015.

• Kicker/punter Alex Craft, an Alter grad, walked onto the team in January 2016. He attended Sinclair Community College last season.
