Ohio State receivers ready for any shot they get

Campbell, Hill leading group in receptions

Two hybrid backs have emerged as Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett’s favorite targets, though it’s still too early to tell who will be the team’s go-to guy in the passing game — or if there will be one at all.

Parris Campbell and K.J. Hill, who are splitting time at H-back, lead the team with 15 catches. Barrett has thrown five touchdown passes, all to different players: Campbell, Terry McLaurin, Austin Mack, Binjimen Victor and Johnnie Dixon.

“You’ve always got to be ready,” McLaurin said. “You make one play and you may get the opportunity to get another and another. You’ve just got to be ready for your opportunities. You may get one. You may get seven. You never know.”

Campbell leads the team with 217 receiving yards, putting him on pace to gain 868 yards in the regular season. That would rank 16th in school history.

The Buckeyes began the season with six different players listed as starters at hybrid back or wide receiver. They’re continuing to show that balance and depth. There’s little competition in the group when it comes to leading the team in catches, yards or touchdowns.

“You obviously want to be the go-to guy,” McLaurin said Monday. “That’s just your competitive nature, being a wide receiver. But the way the offense is set up this year, you’ve got be ready for any shot you get. We don’t necessarily focus on the quantity. If you get one shot, you’ve got to make it your best.”

McLaurin, a redshirt junior, caught his first touchdown of the season last week in a 38-7 victory against Army at Ohio Stadium.

“It felt really good,” he said. “A long time coming. It feels good to get that first one out of the way. You can relax a little bit, too. It was exciting.”

There should be plenty of chances for the receivers to pad their stats Saturday. No. 10 Ohio State (2-1) plays UNLV (1-1) at noon in Columbus. The Rebels gave up six touchdowns to Howard, a FCS program, in a season-opening 43-40 loss on Sept. 3.

“I feel like last week we hit one of our objectives which was to get the ball out into space,” McLaurin said. “When you hit those bubbles, it stretches the team horizontally and opens up the inside zone and some over-the-top shots. We’re just trying to build on that. Hopefully, we can make that happen this week.”

NOTES: Urban Meyer said Wednesday linebacker Chris Worley is questionable for Saturday with a sprained foot. Offensive lineman Matthew Burrell is also questionable with a foot injury. "They're not structural issues," Meyer said, "so they should be back soon."
