The Cincinnati Reds placed catcher Devin Mesoraco on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain on Wednesday before the third game of a series against the Colorado Rockies in Denver.

Mesoraco missed most of the 2016 season, appearing in 16 games, after undergoing surgery to fix a labrum tear in his left shoulder. He returned to action April 28 and is hitting .234 with six home runs in 40 games.

Mesoraco also missed most of the 2015 season, appearing in 23 games, because an impingement in his hip.

Ranking the top recent starts by Reds rookies

To take Mesoraco’s place on the roster, the Reds recalled right-handed pitcher Ariel Hernandez from Triple-A Louisville. Hernandez appeared in five games in April and June and has a 2.00 ERA in nine innings.

The Reds still have two catchers on the roster. Tucker Barnhart is hitting .279 in 58 games. Stuart Turner is hitting .161 in 16 games.
