Report: Cincinnati Reds among favorites to sign top Cuban prospect

The Cincinnati Reds have a long history of success signing Cuban baseball players.

Could another be on the way?

MLB.com included the Reds among five favorites to land Luis Robert, a 19-year-old five-tool outfielder who is the site’s top-rated international prospect.

Also expected to be contenders for Robert are the Astros, White Sox, Padres and Cardinals. The A’s could be in the mix, too.

The Reds have already signed two Cubans in the past year. Right-handed pitcher Vladimir Rodriguez is the No. 6 international prospect while shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez is No. 8.

They are both with the Advanced Single-A Daytona Tortugas this season.

The Reds connections to Cuba go back many years, including seven seasons in the 1950s when they had a Triple-A affiliate in Havana – the Sugar Kings.

Well-known Reds from Cuba include Dolf Luque, Tony Perez, Leo Cardenas and Aroldis Chapman along with current Reds reliever Raisel Iglesias.

Sports Today: NFL draft day thoughts on the Bengals, Browns and Buckeyes

Welcome to NFL draft day!  The league’s nefarious plot to make us care about football year round continues to be a success, and no, I’m not complaining.  The first draft item to run across my feed this morning was about the Cleveland Browns considering taking second-round talent Mitch Trubisky with the No. 1 overall pick. ...

This kindergarten is noisy at nap time

It was late Tuesday afternoon at the Pestalozzi Foundation kindergarten, and a few dozen children and their parents were hanging around past the normal pickup hour. There was no rush to get home, really. They were enjoying the view from the kindergarten’s rear veranda: the inside of Millerntor-Stadion, the 29,546-seat stadium that is home to...
