Springboro races to big early lead, tops Tipp in Flyin’ girls game

Springboro raced to decisive early advantage and stunned Tippecanoe 57-38 in a girls high school basketball game during Saturday’s opener of the 16th Annual Premier Health Flyin’ to the Hoop at Fairmont’s Trent Arena.

Jordan Diehl scored 15 points to go with eight rebounds and Rachel Gillum added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers, who led 18-2 after the first quarter. Allison Mader led Tipp with 10 points.

Just the second girls matchup in Flyin’ history, the game paired two of the area’s best programs in Springboro (10-3) of the GWOC National West and Tipp (11-2) of the GWOC American North. Springboro has consistently been among the area’s best Division I programs. Tipp was beaten in the D-II regional finals the last two seasons by eventual state champ Alter. The Red Devils had a 10-game win streak snapped at Versailles, 54-53.

Alter defeated Cleveland St. Joseph Academy 54-36 in the Flyin’ girls debut last year.

At halftime, Tipp senior Mader was presented the second annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Scholarship that is sponsored by River Valley Credit Union. Mader averages 15.4 points and has signed with Cedarville University to play basketball.

Cincinnati Bengals fans taking their turn giving to another QB’s charity

In the latest reminder there is more to sports than wins and losses, Cincinnati Bengals fans are opening their hearts — and wallets — for the foundation of an opposing team’s quarterback.  The Blake Bortles Foundation reportedly has collected close to $5,000 from Bengals fans who heeded Cincinnati radio host Mo Egger’s...

Myles Garrett named to PFW All-Rookie team

The first overall pick lived up to the hype. After a seven-sack debut season, the Browns’ Myles Garrett was named to the All-Rookie team by the Pro Football Writers on Tuesday. Garrett collected seven sacks despite playing only 11 games and starting nine, slowed by an ankle injury. He added 31 tackles, six tackles for loss, a forced fumble and...

Bengals land guard, Ohio State defender in mock draft

In Matt Miller’s latest mock draft for Bleacher Report, the Bengals get stronger up front. Cincinnati lands Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson at No. 12, a coup given that he’s a top five player in the class, according to Miller. “The Bengals offensive line was (and I'm being nice) trash this year,” Miller said. “Both young...

Bengals fans show love to Blake Bortles’ foundation after upsetting Steelers

Bengals fans are thankful the Jaguars sent the Steelers home. So thankful they’re showing it with their pockets. Bengals fans have donated roughly $5,000 to the Blake Bortles Foundation since Jacksonville defeated Pittsburgh 45-42 on Sunday. Perhaps the generosity was motivated from Bills fans, who donated to Andy Dalton’s foundation after...

Future Buckeye Justin Ahrens shows off bigger body, expanded game at Flyin’ at the Hoop

There was more to see of Justin Ahrens at the 2018 Flyin’ to the Hoop than last year’s version — in more ways than one.  The Versailles senior, who signed with Ohio State in November, said he is an inch taller and about 10 pounds heavier than he was last season.  The reigning Midwest Athletics Conference Player of the Year...
