The historic Marvin Lewis era with the Bengals: Most playoff games, 0 playoff wins

As the Cincinnati Bengals play their 50th season, we’re looking back at some of the most important moments, people and things to know about the franchise’s history. One of the top 50: Marvin Lewis.

The Bengals made Marvin Lewis the ninth head coach in franchise history on Jan. 14, 2003, and he has held that position ever since.

Lewis passed Sam Wyche as the winningest coach in franchise history with his 65th win in 2011. Through 2016, his record stands at 118-110-3.

Lewis led the Bengals to an 8-8 record in his first year, snapping a streak of six consecutive losing seasons. After another 8-8 campaign in 2004, he guided the Bengals to a division championship and their first playoff berth in 15 years in 2005.

In addition to winning the most games in franchise history, Lewis also has coached in the most playoff games. But his 0-7 record makes him the only coach in NFL history to lose his first seven playoff games. He also owns the NFL record for most consecutive playoff losses.

The Bengals playoff drought of 26 consecutive seasons without a postseason victory is the third longest in NFL history.

Lewis enters 2017 in the final year of a contract for the first time since 2010.
