Where are they now: Updates on former Cincinnati Reds stars

Johnny Cueto to make 100th start in Cincinnati on Sunday

San Francisco Giants starter Johnny Cueto will make his 100th start at Great American Ball Park on Sunday but only his second as a visiting pitcher.

Cueto is one of the many former Reds stars making a living elsewhere in baseball. There are so many, it isn’t quite as special as it once was for the Reds to see their former teammates in a visiting uniform. They don’t even have much time to keep up with them in the box scores.

“It’s kind of tough,” catcher Devin Mesoraco said Friday before the start of a three-game series against the Giants. “We have so much to worry about here. We don’t really worry a whole lot about them. It’s definitely good to see them succeed.”

Reds manager Bryan Price roots for his former players as individuals but cares about only one team, his own. He isn’t the type to check the stats every day to see who’s playing well.

“I don’t read the paper,” Price said. “I watch the baseball highlights if we win. I watch the MLB Channel one time through. That’s what I watch. (The players) have that stuff on 24/7. I can’t bear to watch 24/7 baseball. I can’t watch it over and over again. It drives me nuts. I don’t know how these other guys do it. I can’t stand it. If we don’t win, I don’t watch it, and I don’t look at box scores a great deal. However, I do try to stay aware of what Jay Bruce is doing in New York. I couldn’t be happier about that. And I love to see what Johnny and Todd (Frazier) and those guys are doing. I don’t really hunt it down.”

Here’s a quick glance at a few former Reds:

• Cueto is 4-1 with a 4.86 ERA in his second season in San Francisco.

• Bruce is hitting .291 with nine home runs in his first full season with the New York Mets.

• Brandon Phillips is hitting .329 in his first season with the Atlanta Braves.

• Frazier is hitting .188 with three home runs in his second season with the Chicago White Sox.

• Mike Leake is 3-1 with a 1.85 ERA in five starts in his second season with the St. Louis Cardinals.

• Aroldis Chapman has a 0.87 ERA in 11 relief appearances with the New York Yankees. He has 16 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings.

• Mat Latos had a 6.60 ERA in three starts with the Toronto Blue Jays. He was designated for assignment Friday.

• J.J. Hoover has a 1.69 ERA in 13 relief appearances in his first season with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

• Chris Heisey has made two starts and appeared in 16 other games in his second season with the Washington Nationals. He’s hitting .160.
