Wrestling: A Saturday to remember for Eaton

The Eaton High School wrestling team had a Saturday to remember, storming back to claim the Graham 2 sectional title at Graham High School.

The Falcons hosted both the Graham 1 and Graham 2 sectional tournaments with the top four in each weight class advancing to the Division II district tournament at Wilmington High School.

Eaton claimed its title with 174 points. Chaminade Julienne, the day-one leader, held off Carroll for second place by 4.5 points, 136.5-132.

Eaton got titles from Wade Monebrake (120), Coleman Manning (132), Seth Hodapp (170) and Spencer Reynolds (182) in advancing nine.

CJ got a title in one of the marquee matches with Micah Marshall handing Greater Western Ohio Conference champ Caleb Black of Tipp City a 3-2 loss.

Carroll got a title from Jesse Younce while Tipp City got one from Grant Carlson at 220.

Oakwood’s titles came from Jakob Nelson-Mays (145) and Mike Morris (285).

Graham cruised to the Graham 1 title with 316.5 points, qualifying all 14 wrestlers and producing 12 champs.

Valley View had five qualifiers in finishing second, including the lone win against Graham in the finals.

Stone Day won his rubber match with Kavan Sarver 4-3 at 195. Day had defeated Sarver in the finals at the Valley View Invitational 3-2 while Sarver had defeated Day in the state duals 4-3.

Alex Kowal (145) and Michael Patterson (285) were both second for Fenwick.

Locals had a couple of upsets in the Washington Court House sectional.

Waynesville’s Travis Foster entered as the sixth seed at 120 but knocked off second seed Blake Seaman of Clinton Massie 9-7 in the semis in finishing second.

Bellbrook’s Ben Sherrill claimed the title at 126 with a 10-6 win over returning state qualifier Dawson Carter of Hillsboro.

Division I: Beavercreek advanced 10 to the district tournament in claiming the Centerville 1 title with 189 points.

Northmont was second with 182.5 after getting titles from Andrew Knick (113) Chad Craft (120), Chase Craft (126) and Gabe Newburg (182).

The Beavers got titles from Kyah Patrick (106), Ian Heiland (145) and Keaton Keller (152).

Butler advanced 10 to the district in running away with the Centerville 2 title with 212.5 points. Springboro was second with 166.5.

Lebanon advanced eight from the Lebanon sectional in finishing third with 148 points.

Division III: Preble Shawnee won the Blanchester sectional with 236 points, getting titles from Travis Smith (132) and Jordan Stubbs (182).

Reece Human cruised to the title at 220 for Carlisle while Legacy Christian got titles from Tommy Hoskins (120) and AJ Warner (126).

Versailles and Troy Christian finished second and third to the state’s top-ranked team, Mechanicsburg, at Lehman.

The Tigers got a title from Jerome Bay (182) and Troy Christian got titles from Ethan Turner (106), Jacob Edwards (113) and Jared Ford (138).

“This is a brutal sectional with many projected state placers and is definitely the strongest sectional in the state,” Versailles coach Jerry Bey said. “There are many kids going home that would get out of other sectionals.”

On deck: The district tournaments are next Friday and Saturday at Fairmont, Wilmington and Troy. The top four in each weight class advance to the state tournament March 9-11 at the Schottenstein Center.
