Effort underway to make college textbooks exempt from sales tax

“As the youngest member of the Ohio House of Representatives, I am excited to co-sponsor this bill that would help thousands of college students save money,” Antani said. “With higher education costs skyrocketing, this is a common sense bill that will help many students who struggle to afford their textbooks.”

According to a statement from Antani, to be eligible for the exemption, students must be enrolled in an Ohio college or university and the textbook must be required by the course the student is enrolled in. Students can meet these requirements by showing a student ID and a list of required materials for the course.

“This bill will help a lot of college students in Ohio who struggle to pay for college,” said Gavin Doll, president of the Wright State University Student Government. “We need to find creative ways to lower the cost of going to college and this bill is one of those ideas.”

The legislation is expected to be introduced by the end of the day Monday, according to Antani, and is anticipated to be referred to the House Ways and Means Committee for further consideration.
