Fuyao founder says technology is manufacturing’s future

Cao Dewang, founder and chairman of Fuyao Glass Industry Group — the global parent of Moraine’s Fuyao Glass America — recently told Ohio college students that the future of manufacturing depends on increasingly sophisticated technology — and the skills to control that technology.

Cao, also sometimes called Cho Tak Wong, recently spoke with University of Cincinnati students, according to a story from China Daily.

The story said Cao invited the students to join Fuyao Glass America.

“We desperately need new technicians with software skills to run robots,” the story quoted him as saying. “The Internet industry is more complicated. However, we will work toward that goal no matter what.”

After $400 million in investment, Fuyao Glass America has begun to see a profit, the story said Cao told students.

In May 2014, Cao bought the former General Motors plant in Moraine, and began refitting it almost immediately, creating what he says today is the world’s largest auto glass production site in one location.

Today, Fuyao’s West Stroop Road plant has 2,300 employees, and company leaders have talked consistently about hiring even more. Anyone who visits the plant can also see plenty of automation assisting and driving the production process.

“We want, in two to five years, to become the company with the strongest technology,” the China Daily story quoted Cao as saying. “We aim to bring new technology and innovation to the industry. We want not only to be the largest in size but also the best in technology.”

The story said Cao was speaking last week at the Global Economic and Career Outlook Summit, hosted by the Greater Cincinnati Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
