Health system, which owns Premier Health stake, cleared by Vatican for merger

Catholic Health Initiatives, which owns a 22 percent stake in Dayton’s Premier Health, has been cleared by the Vatican to merge with another large Catholic health system.

CHI and Dignity Health will merge to create the nation's largest nonprofit hospital company by revenue, according to trade publication ModernHealthcare.

The merger still needs approval from state regulators.

Good Samaritan Hospital's assets had been owned by CHI, which had a joint-operating agreement with Premer. As of Jan. 1, CHI transferred the hospital's assets to Premier and CHI received a 22 percent interest in Premier Health.

CHI’s extensive network also includes the St. Leonard Living Community in Centerville.
