STORE CLOSURES: 9 retailers closing stores nationwide this year

It’s been a tumultuous start of 2017 for several retailers, which have announced the closures of hundreds of stores across the nation. Several of these stores will close locations in Ohio, and across the Midwest.

1. Macy’s

Macy’s is going to shut down 68 stores in the coming months, including three in Ohio. Macy’s will close locations in Columbus, Sandusky and Steubenville. More than 193 employees will be impacted in Ohio. READ MORE

2. J.C. Penney

J.C. Penney announced on Friday that it will close up to 140 stores in the coming months, but hasn’t identified specific locations that will be impacted. All the stores should be closed in the second quarter of 2017. Two distribution facilities will also shut down. READ MORE

3. Sears

Sears Holdings will close another round of Sears and Kmart stores before April. Four locations will close down in Ohio. Experts expect the closings to continue in 2017 as retailers bring in less revenue through brick-and-mortar stores. READ MORE

4. Kmart

Kmart, also owned by Sears Holdings, will close seven stores in Ohio. Two Kmart locations, Indian Ripple in Beavercreek and Woodman Drive in Dayton, remain in the Dayton area. READ MORE

5. The Limited

The Limited has closed all locations across the U.S., including at least three in the local area. Store locations closed in late December at The Greene Town Center in Beavercreek, The Liberty Center and Tri-County Mall in Cincinnati. The company filed for bankruptcy shortly after. READ MORE

6. Ann Taylor

Ann Taylor also closed its location at The Greene Town Center in Beavercreek in early January. The company also closed locations in California and Indiana this week. Ascena Retail, Ann Taylor’s parent company, said the store’s sales fell 11 percent last quarter. READ MORE

7. Family Christian

Christian faith-based gift and book store chain Family Christian announced it’s closing all of its 240 stores nationwide, including four locations in the area. Store closures will impact employees in 36 states, including Ohio. READ MORE

8. MC Sports

A Midwest-based sporting goods retail chain will shut down all of its stores, including three locally. MC Sports, legally known as Michigan Sporting Goods Distributors, announced today it plans to close all of its 68 stores across the Midwest. The chain has local stores in Piqua, Springfield and Wilmington. READ HERE


BCBGMAXAZRIA announced it will close 120 stores across the U.S. over the next eight to 10 weeks. The only store impacted in Ohio currently is the outlet store in Monroe. All other BCBG stores will remain open as now. The BCBG location at the Tanger Outlets in Jeffersonville closed in June, according to a spokesman for the outlet mall. READ MORE
