The company’s technology is also being used on transportation in 14 other U.S. cities, working for a range of advertisers, from regional brands to large national corporations, such as McDonald’s and 7-Eleven.

“Two main factors helped inspire the idea for the company,” company founder Russ Gottesman said. “I was an avid transit rider and worked as a marketing manager for the traffic division for Westwood One. As I was coming home from a baseball game on the Chicago Red Line approaching Chinatown, I wondered why restaurants couldn’t speak directly to local riders when they’re hungry after a game.”

CommuterAds has won 15 first-place digital and social media awards by the American Public Transit Association and was named “one of the best student ideas of 2009” by The New York Times.
