2 days of Halloween fun this weekend in Middletown

There are two can’t-miss events in Middletown this weekend to celebrate Halloween with music, costumes and a film favorite.

First up is Monster Bash from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Governor's Square Park. The highlight of this family-friendly event is the costumes.

“A lot of people show up year-after-year. And, the fact they can show up, and nobody knows who they are, there’s a mystique about that,” said Tim Lewis, co-chair of the event.

“Everybody dresses up, and they go to the limit. Some of the costumes are very original. It’s worth it just to come out and see all of the great costumes. Last year, we had a twelve-foot werewolf show up,” he said.

Prizes will be awarded in categories for both adults and children. The adult categories include: Best Costume Group (groups with three or more); Scariest Costume; and Best Couple. Children’s categories include: Most Original; Best Costume; and Scariest Costume.

“Judges will be going around throughout the evening, taking pictures and making note of who they think should win,” Lewis said.

The Monster Bash entertainment lineup will include two Middletown area acts — Powerglide and 3 Peace — that will play classic rock favorites. Powerglide will take the stage about 6:30 p.m.

“It’s high-energy music that everybody knows and can dance to,” Lewis said.

Also planned this weekend is the annual Hocus Pocus Halloween Family Fun Festival that will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, on South Main Street, between Central and First avenues.

This event features trick or treating, a Creepy Car Show, a magic and illusion show, professional pumpkin carvers and dance demonstrations.

All the fun wraps up with a showing of the Halloween classic movie “Hocus Pocus” inside the Sorg Opera House. The movie will start at 6 p.m.

This is a free, family fun event for everyone. Food trucks and craft vendors will be on site for purchases.
