Classic Dayton restaurant puts the bacon in BLT

Joe Kiss Hickory Bar-B-Q may not be the first restaurant that comes to mind when you think of bacon, lettuce and tomatoes.

The Dayton classic at 1082 Brown St. is best known for its cabbage rolls and barbecue chicken and ribs. But with its crispy thick cut bacon and toasted white bread, the BLT on the lunch menu ($3.95) deserves a little love, too.

There are a lot of bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches out there, but few of them give you any reason to write home.

With fresh tasting ingredients, Hickory Bar-B-Q does BLT the right way.

Because you can never have enough bacon, I ordered mine recently with a loaded baked potato ($3). The regular baked potato is $2.

Loading it up is worth the $1. It came topped with paprika garnished sour cream, cheese, bacon and butter.

The restaurant local roots are deep.

Born in Romania and of Hungarian decent, Joseph and Irene Kiss founded the Brown Street restaurant in 1962 with Steve Kolb and wife Sylvia, according to Hickory’s website.

Steve Kolb is Irene Kiss’ brother.

He and his wife once owned four Hickory Bar B-Q locations.

Kiss and her husband bought the Kolb portion of the Brown Street location in 1989 and changed the restaurant’s’s name to Joe Kiss Hickory Bar-B-Q.

Irene Kiss died in 2010 at age 87. Joe Kiss died in 1995 at 75. The couple’s daughter and son-in-law, Margo and Gary Fisher, now own Joe Kiss Hickory Bar-B-Q.

The Kolb’s granddaughter Jessica Manis and her husband Mike now own Old Hickory Bar-B-Q Restaurant and Carry-out at 241 Woodman Dr., the only other remaining Hickory Bar-B-Q location.
