I often say this, but it’s really true: I love my job. I love working for a great company. I love meeting country artists. I love working with my on-air partner, Frye Guy. When my alarm clock starts screaming at 2:02 a.m. every weekday morning, I don’t necessarily love it, but I don’t mind.

Most of all, I love connecting with you folks who listen to K99.1FM. You’re my radio family. And because we’re “kin” we can be honest with each other. Throughout my 25-plus years here, I’ve received all kinds of feedback, some good. “I like your hair,” “you look like you’ve lost weight!” Some not so good, “What’s wrong with your hair?” “Haven’t missed any meals lately, have you Nance?” Ouch, but the truth hurts.

If you’ve never seen me, I’m tall (5 feet, 10 inches) and represent my German heritage. I’m a big girl. And truth be told, I was fat. I knew it. I felt it. But the time had come when I couldn’t hide behind my height or “big boned-ness” anymore. Frye Guy had been on a diet he advertised for and kept encouraging me to try it. I told myself the lies we all have. “I can do this on my own.” Right.

I’ve tried every diet from A to Z. Sometimes they worked, for a while. I’d go down. Then back up. Down. Back up again. Up even more. It’s no miracle. Calories in, calories out. Eat less, move more.

Trisha Yearwood lost about 40 pounds over a year ago by coming up with her own weight-loss plan. She told Country Weekly she always has to make a conscious decision, “You might never stop craving fried chicken, but you just find a way to not have it very often. It’s a struggle and it’s hard. But I’m winning right now, so I’m going to enjoy it. I want to stay here because it feels better.” Words of wisdom.

Then Miranda Lambert infamously took off 30 pounds this year.

With these two women as inspiration, I sucked it up and tried the diet. Did it work? Yes! Since June, I’ve lost 50 pounds. Pinky swear.

I’m still not used to it. When I see pictures of myself, I wonder who that woman is. And I don’t avoid mirrors anymore. The support I’ve received from my friends and radio family has been amazing.

Weight is something I’ve struggled with all my life. And even though I still have a “weigh” to go, it feels too good to feel good, to paraphrase Trisha.

I loved what Miranda said when asked what her husband Blake had to say about her size: “He doesn’t care if my weight changes as long as I stay the same inside.” She says, “My weight yo-yos because I like to live. I’m a Cheetos girl. I won’t give up vodka.” Heard that Miranda.

But to be honest, nothing will ever taste as good to me again as being healthier feels. Thanks to all of you, I’m on my “weigh.”
