5 Dayton rock bands that have gone international

For international music fans, Dayton is most known for the rich funk scene that birthed now classic acts like Ohio Players, Zapp, Slave and Sun.

The region has also been home to jazz singers like Little Miss Cornshucks, bluegrass musicians like Red Allen and ’60s rockers like the Lemon Pipers. In the late ’70s, local innovators like Toxic Reasons and Dementia Precox helped create the indie rock scene that served as the launch pad for these five internationally known modern rock acts.


Formed: 1983

Style: lo-fi, indie rock

Status: Sole founding member Robert Pollard has broken up the band several times and revived it. He is currently playing shows with a new lineup supporting Guided By Voices’ recently released double album, “August By Cake.”

Formed: 1990

Style: modern rock

Status: The Breeders have had several lineup changes over the years but core members, Dayton-based sisters Kim and Kelley Deal, are currently working on the group’s new album using the lineup that made the smash album, “Last Splash” (1993).

Style: electro-punk

Status: The group was planning to sign a major label deal when tragedy struck in May 1997. Brainiac’s career was cut short when singer-guitarist Tim Taylor died in a single car accident just a few blocks from his home in Dayton.

Formed: 2001

Status: Although guitarist Casey Calvert died in 2007, and drummer Eron Bucciarelli and lead guitarist Micah Carli left in 2014 and 2015 respectively, Hawthorne Heights remains active. Founding members singer JT Woodruff and bassist Matt Ridenour continue to keep the band on the road.

Style: Metalcore

Status: Some of the members have changed but founding members Mike Hranica (vocals), Jeremy DePoyster (rhythm guitar) and Andy Trick (bass). This summer The Devil Wears Prada is on tour with Anthrax and Killswitch Engage.
