Salvation Army donation center now open near downtown Dayton

Did you know that the Salvation Army runs an Adult Rehabilitation Center?

The 70-bed center offers a free, faith-based long-term residential program focused on character building and life skills for those who suffer from addiction and other social issues.

“Our goal is to help those who struggle with destructive behaviors learn to live healthy and productive lives and add value to the community in which they live,” says the organization’s Maj. Patricia Kurtz. “We serve between 400 and 500 individuals in a year’s time. Last year we served 409.”

You may have noticed the just-completed Salvation Army Donation Center on the corner of South Patterson Boulevard and West Apple Street (106 W. Apple St.). The facility is now accepting donations of clothing and household items at this new location. Your donated items will be sold in at the organization’s Family Thrift Stores in order to fund the Rehabilitation Center.

“The sale of the donated clothing, furniture and small electronics help pay for the daily operations of the center,” says Kurtz.

In addition to donating items for the thrift shops, Kurtz is also hoping our Make a Difference readers will donate items that can help Rehabilitation Center residents learn and grow.

“We have put together a “wish” list of things we think would help with that process,” Kurtz says. Here are items they’d like to have:

  • Personal care items
  • Flip Flops for men and women
  • Hair cuts
  • NLT Life Recovery Bibles
  • Office Supplies/copy paper
  • Membership to local pools (hotel, etc.)
  • Recreation equipment
  • Art supplies
  • Music lessons
  • Special events/prizes
  • Vacuums
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Copy machine
  • Storage shed
  • Power washer for outdoor areas
  • Bulk meat
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Bulk coffee

Donations can be dropped off at the Donation Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and the thrift stores will also accept donations. For larger items or larger amounts of items, you can call (937) 461-2769.

Monetary donations can be made payable to: The Salvation Army Dayton ARC, 1630 E. Second St. Dayton, 45403

Great feedback

It’s always nice to pass along the positive feedback we’ve received from organizations so that you, our readers, can see what an important difference you are making in the lives of the needy in our community.

Writes Beth Cloyd, a board member of Corner Cupboard Charities: “I wanted to send you a quick note to tell you how much impact your articles have and how grateful the Corner Cupboard — as well as many other charities in the city of Dayton are — for your help in appealing for donations from the generous folks in the city of Dayton and surrounding areas.

“The donations have been amazing since your last plea in the Dayton Daily News a few months ago. Just wanted to let you know your work has impact and is greatly appreciated.”
