Add this to the list of proper concert etiquette

Over the years, we’ve talked about proper concert etiquette. “Don’t block other peoples’ view.” “Go with the flow. If everyone’s standing, stand up. If everyone’s sitting, sit down.” “Don’t heckle the band!” “Don’t spill beer on other concert people.” You get the picture. I’d like to add to the list, if I may. “Don’t watch the show through your phone.” Meaning, you paid good money to see your favorites live, why spend the whole time with your arms in the air holding a cell phone?

Here’s another one. “Be selective what you throw onstage.” I’m sure plenty of male artists don’t mind the occasional ladies’ lingerie decorating their space. Unless you’re Dolly Parton, chances are good it won’t hurt anything if the artist gets hit by a brassiere. When Travis Tritt’s anthem, “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)” topped the charts in the 90’s, fans would toss money on stage. That was stopped when someone with good aim hit him right above the eye. Announcements were made at subsequent shows that if anyone threw money on stage at any time, the concert would end.

Pop singer Justin Bieber has been pelted with eggs and water bottles. Boy band One Direction not only has female undergarments thrown at them, but female products on occasion! Ozzy Osbourne infamously bit the head off what he thought was a fake bat tossed at him during a concert in the 80’s. The bat wasn’t fake, and neither were the series of rabies shots in the aftermath.

All kidding aside, outside of flowers, throwing stuff onstage is dumb. Case in point, last Friday up and coming country singer Dustin Lynch was performing at the MulletFest in Niceville, Florida. “Niceville” wasn’t so nice after some knucklehead decided he wanted to test his pitching skills.

“I was walking down the catwalk and wham, out of nowhere this beer can just nailed me in the face,” the 29 year old told People Magazine in an exclusive interview. “It was a completely full can and it felt like a baseball had hit me.”

Dustin was cut just under his right eye, but pro that he is, finished the show.

“It was just a little bloodier than usual,” he said.

Afterward, Dustin Tweeted, “On my way to the hospital for a few stitches, I’ll be okay … I appreciate all of you. Fyi the guy who hit me with a beer can got away.” Nothing “nice” about that!

Dustin didn’t miss a beat though, doing a show in Georgia Saturday night. Okay, kids, what have we learned from this? Dustin sums it up to People, saying “the moral of the story is don’t throw beer cans, period. It’s not cool.”
