How you can help feed and clothe the needy

You may have heard that St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will be closing in April 2018. The hopeful news is that the Episcopal Church Foundation has agreed to keep the building open until the end of 2018.

“A task force has been established within the Dayton community to come up with a three- to five-year plan to house the food pantry, our free clothing room and perhaps other ministries for the future in this building or somewhere else in our vicinity along the Salem corridor,” says Judy Aldridge, clothing room director. “The Dayton Episcopal Clothing Room is a free resource of clothing for the whole family. Many times struggling families are unable to shop for clothing. In 2016, our clothing room served approximately 392 adults and children.”

This year, she says, the clothing room also provided 100 students with new school uniforms, socks and underwear. The Food Pantry, which also provides personal care items, served 4,731 individuals representing 1,679 households.

Here’s what they need to stock the two pantries:

  • Toothpaste/Toothbrushes
  • Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Razors/Shaving Cream
  • Lotions/Skin Care
  • Deodorant
  • Bar Soap
  • Gently used, clean clothing
  • New socks and underwear
  • Warm winter items and under-garments
  • Coats, especially for children
  • Linens and blankets

Donated items can be dropped off from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Thursday at the church, 1060 Salem Ave., Dayton, 45405. The phone number is (937) 278-7345.

The food pantry is open from 9-11:30 a.m. on the third and fourth Saturdays of the month. During December the pantry will only be open on the third Saturday with extended hours until 2 p.m. The clothing room is open from 9-11:30 a.m. the first Saturday of the month.

Monetary donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with clothing room or food pantry in the memo line. For more information, contact Judy Aldridge at 927-278-7345 or email standrewsdayton@att.net

Can your group use spices, mixes?

A reader who has purchased a variety of cooking ingredients she is now unable to use is offering them to a non-profit organization who might make good use of them.

“I have canned anchovies, various seasoning sauces, dehydrated onions and celery as well as all sorts of mixes,” she explains. I’d like to give it to a group that prepares meals for the needy.”

If your organization would like these items, please let me know at MMoss@coxohio.com
