Arrow Wine burglary: What do Kettering residents have to say about crime in their city?

The Arrow Wine and Spirits store in Kettering was broken into early Friday morning, leaving the doors to the business shattered and merchandise missing.

Surveillance video obtained from the store shows four suspects breaking into the business, located at 2950 Far Hills Ave., at about 4 a.m.

The store’s owner said two cases of Crown Royal, a few bottles of vodka and a few packs of cigarettes were stolen during the burglary.

Kettering police Capt. Mark Burian said the suspects also tried to get into the cash register, but the owner told police that the cash drawers were empty.

Friday’s burglary comes after Kettering recently surveyed its residents about crime concerns in the city. In June, officials released the results of a citizen survey that found the three biggest crime concerns in Kettering — drug problems, thefts and school safety.

Residents were asked to choose three issues of greatest concern, and drug crimes ranked No. 1 with 83 percent of respondents including it.

Other issues in order of importance to citizens were: traffic safety, violence and drunk driving.

“We take citizen input very seriously, so each year we conduct a Citizen Satisfaction Survey,” Police Chief Chip Protsman said when the results were released. “The issues of greatest concern to our residents are areas where we dedicate resources.”

The survey found that 62 percent of the participants have not been victims of crime in the city. That was a decrease from 71 percent of crime-free respondents polled in 2016 and decreased from 69 percent in 2015.

Of the actual victims of crime, theft (items stolen from cars) followed by other thefts were the most commonly identified incidents followed by fraud-related problems.

One thousand paper surveys with return envelopes were sent to random Kettering residents who requested participation in the Kettering Police and Communication (Dispatch) Center’s Community Satisfaction Survey, which focused on 2017.
