9 athletes who brought their game to Ohio politics

According to multiple reports, former NFL and Ohio State football player Anthony Gonzalez may be considering running for Congress.

Gonzalez expressed interest in joining the race for the 16th Congressional District, containing Wayne County and suburbs of Cleveland, Akron and Canton, after meeting with the National Republican Congressional District.

Gonzalez isn’t the only sports figure to hold a political position. Here are several that are from Ohio:

1. John Boehner, the former Speaker of the House and native of Ohio, was a linebacker at Moeller High School in the late 1960s.

2. Jim Jordan, Ohio's 4th Congressional District representative and previously a state Senator, was a four-time state wrestling champion at Graham High School with a career record of 150-1. He was also a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion at the University of Wisconsin.

3. Jon Husted, Ohio's 53rd and current Secretary of State, was a four-sport athlete at Montpelier High School and then played football for the University of Dayton. His team won the 1989 NCAA Division III National Championship in Phoenix City, Ala.

4. Cliff Hite was a quarterback at Findlay High School and at the University of Kentucky before later coaching current NFLer Ben Roethlisberger at Findlay. Hite is now the 1st Congressional District representative.

5. Kevin Boyce, currently serving in the Franklin County Commission, attended University of Toledo on a track scholarship in the 1990s.

6. Tim Ryan, was a quaterback at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren. He was recruited to play football at Youngstown State University, but his career ended because of a knee injury. Currently he is a representative for the 13th Congressional District.

8. Rob Portman, U.S. Senator from Ohio, played baseball at Cincinnati Country Day School.

9. Josh Mandel, Ohio's state treasurer, played football at Beachwood High School as a quarterback.
