Base lakes stocked with trout in spring, fall

The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Natural Resources program annually stocks the base lakes with trout twice each year: in the spring and fall.

Wright-Patterson’s Bass and Gravel lakes, located in Area A, were stocked with rainbow trout Dec. 12. A total of 500 pounds of trout was delivered on that date. The trout weigh between 3/4 to 2 pounds each.

Trout are introduced in water ways with deeper waters. This cold-water fish needs cool, deeper waters to survive during the hot temperatures of the summer months.

To fish at the Wright-Patterson lakes, you must possess a valid Wright-Patt fishing permit. Children under 12 years of age are allowed to fish on base but must be accompanied by an adult with a valid fishing license.

A base fishing permit is required to fish all base lakes and streams. The price for an annual permit is $18, and a daily permit is $6. The annual permit will remain valid through the February each year. A state fishing license is not required to fish the base lakes; however, one is required to fish in the Mad River while on base.

A limit of four trout can be caught daily. Fish caught by children will be included in the limit for the licensed adult.

Fishing permit can be purchased at the Outdoor Recreation office in Bldg. 95 or at the Rod and Gun Club in Bldg. 892, both in Area A.
