One firm just moved to downtown Dayton. Why it was ‘the only option.’

RSM US’s ribbon-cutting ceremony today celebrated the opening of the accounting firm’s new downtown offices.

But just as much, the event was hailed as further proof of downtown’s evolution into a live, work, play environment that can attract good-paying businesses and high-quality talent.

RSM has moved its offices from Moraine to a building at 2 - 10 S. Patterson Blvd. in Webster Station, near the Dayton Metro Library and Warped Wing Brewing Co. The firm moved its 70 employees in on June 1.

The firm, which has offices in about 90 communities across the country, occupies the two top floors of the three-story building, which was previously vacant. The firm occupies about 14,000 square feet.

The average age of employees with the RSM Dayton office is somewhere under 30, because the firm relies on young talent who have recently graduated college, said Todd Pleiman, RSM office managing partner.

When RSM decided it was going to relocate, the partners wanted to stay in Dayton and downtown was the only real option because it is the place to be, Pleiman said.

“There are so many positive things going on in downtown, and we wanted to be a part of it,” he said.

Dayton’s live, work, play options are growing and that’s why an accounting firm that could relocate anywhere it wanted came downtown, said Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley.

“Your employees made it a priority to be in downtown because of the amenities,” she said. “We’ve been working hard for decades to have a live, work, play environment.”

The firm has been in the Dayton area for more than 100 years, but not always as RSM.

Webster Station is a hotbed of development activity in Dayton.

An office building was constructed in recent years in the Water Street near RiverScape, and the district also has welcomed hundreds of new apartments and expects to add even more.

The RSM building is on the same block as the City View townhouses, which are upscale homes for sale that sold for around $350,000 and up. Other nearby investments included the construction of the new $64 million downtown library and new restaurants, tap rooms and shops.
