Heads up! Dayton has 3 new speed traffic cameras that are now active

The city of Dayton has installed three fixed traffic cameras to catch speeders in north and northwest Dayton.

Two cameras have been placed at Gettysburg Avenue at Fairbanks Avenue. A third has been put on North Main Street at Siebenthaler Avenue.

The cameras went live on Wednesday, April 11 but only issued warnings to motorists caught on camera speeding for the first 30 days.

The city has placed a mobile speed trailer on North Main Street near Forest Glen Avenue, which began recording speeding violations that Wednesday. Information captured on camera by the mobile unit will lead to citations immediately.

There are two other mobile speed cameras in the city.

The new fixed camera sites had a 30-day warning period. During that time, the city mailed out warning notices to the registered owners of vehicles caught speeding.

Now, citations will be issued by mail that include information for making payment and appealing the violations, the city said.

Dayton Police Department says data shows injury crashes have fallen by about 15 percent from January 1 to April 9, compared to the same period in 2017.

“Violations also continue to decrease at current photo enforcement sites,” the city said. “There are fewer violations and, more importantly, motorists are using safer driving practices.”

Red light cameras are planned at two locations: Linden Avenue at Smithville Road and West Third Street at James H. McGee Boulevard.
