Butler County residents warned of 'thug' scammers posing as police

Scammers are at it again and this time they are posing as law enforcement officers, according to Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.

A victim recently reported that someone posing as “Lieutenant Daniels” called her, stating he worked with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and that she owed money to the court.

The victim was instructed to purchase a gift card from a local store. After she later read the numbers on the back of the gift to the suspect, he intercepted the funds.

This is a re-occurring scam, according to Jones.

“Unfortunately, quite a few people fall for this,” he said.

“Most of the time, these thugs are not in this country, but I would like anyone with information on scammers to contact us immediately,” Jones said.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office would not ask for money by phone for any reason, according to Jones.

If you receive a phone call asking for money from anyone stating they are an employee from the sheriff’s office, it is a scam, he said.
