Inmate who flees Dayton Art Institute work detail in custody

UPDATE @ 2 p.m.

An inmate who walked away from a work detail shortly before 11:15 a.m. at the Dayton Art Institute is back in custody.

The inmate worker, identified as 30-year-old Brandon Wayne Dotson, was apprehended around 1:20 p.m. in the 300 block of Geyer Street by Grandview Medical Center police, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Dayton police also assisted deputies in the search for Dotson, which led to a lockdown at the Dayton Early College Academy in the vicinity.

Dotson was sentenced to the Montgomery County Jail on a misdemeanor theft charge by Vandalia Municipal Court.

The lockdown has been lifted, DECA Prep officials said.

The escaped inmate has not been caught, but officials said he’s no longer in the vicinity of the school.

The inmate, whose name was not released, was part of a work crew when he fled around 11:30 a.m. from Stoddard and Forest avenues by McKinley Park in Dayton, according to the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center.

The Dayton Early College Academy was put on lockdown Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The lockdown was put in place after an escaped prisoner was seen near the Dayton Art Institute, which is in the vicinity of the school, said Deputy Superintendent David Taylor.

Several police cars were in the areas searching for the prisoners about noon. The cruisers are no longer on the scene, but the school remains on lockdown, Taylor said.
