Man’s remains found in Warren County

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of death of a 43-year-old Columbus man whose remains were found on Nov. 3 off Clarksville Road, according to authorities.

Jerold Haas, 43, of Grant Ave. in Columbus, was reported missing on Sept. 15 to Columbus police, according to Doyle Burke, chief investigator for the Warren County Coroner’s Office.

Burke said there was no indication of violence.

Haas’ remains were found by hunters. The cause of death was undetermined on Monday.

“There’s nothing that stands out,” said Burke, a former homicide detective for the Dayton Police Department. “We’re investigating it as an unexplained death.”

The investigation has determined Haas traveled from Columbus to the area, including Middletown and Waynesville, Burke said.

A forensic anthropologist is working on the case with authorities, Burke said.

“We’re lucky. He could have been out there for years,” Burke said.

He referred further questions to the sheriff’s office.

“We are extensively investigating these remains,” Chief Deputy Barry Riley said.
