Piqua police want residents to help them hunt porch pirates

Piqua police are asking residents to participate in the department’s theft-deterrence program in an effort to track thieves who steal packages from porches this holiday season.

“We know our citizens appreciate some of our previous decoy efforts, and we think we will find some citizens that

will want to participate with this program,” Chief of Police Bruce Jamison said.

The department would like residents to place decoy packages on their porches that contains a tracking device. After the packages are stolen, officers can track down and arrest the porch pirates, according to a press release.

In addition, Piqua police has come up with some steps residents can take to avoid becoming theft victims:

  • Installing video surveillance and warning signs where packages are  delivered
  • Consider installing a "parcel box" to accept deliveries and then be locked
  • Schedule packages to arrive when someone is home
  • Send packages to a secure location rather than leaving them unattended
