Police find woman hiding in closet with items reported stolen

A woman has been charged after she allegedly stole several items from her neighbor at a Hester Road apartment building.

The report was made at approximately 10:56 p.m. May 26 after the resident came home from work and discovered missing items that included a laptop, cell phone, iPad, shoes and designer purse.

The resident said she had a friend watch her apartment, but he left for a while around 3:45 p.m. and a door was kept unlocked because he had not been given a key.

After discovering the items missing, the resident told police  she saw a neighbor — identified as Amber Riddell — walking into another apartment wearing her missing pair of shoes.

When police tried to contact Riddell, a man in that apartment at first said she was not present. But then he allowed the officer to come in and search the apartment.

The officer found Riddell, 30, hiding in a bedroom closet with several items of clothing on top of her.

She refused to identify herself and another officer arrived to assist as her behavior escalated, according to the police report.

The missing pink and black Nike Shox shoes were found on the floor. Other items, including a pink Coach bag, and Apple iPad Mini and a Compaq Presario Notebook were found behind a couch. The missing LG K20 Plus phone was found in a pile of clothes in the bedroom.

The victim identified the items as hers and Riddell was taken to the police department. She was charged with burglary and taken to the Butler County Jail.
