Springfield man accused of choking woman driving with baby in car

A Springfield man is facing charges in connection with a Sunday night incident during which he is accused of grabbing a wheel of a car from the passenger seat and almost causing an accident with a baby in the car.

Jasean Fleming, 18, is charged with child endangering, domestic abuse and obstructing official business in Clark County Municipal Court. He pleaded not guilty during an appearance on Monday, and his bond was set at $3,500.

Police began their investigation when they were flagged down by two women standing on a sidewalk in front of a home on the 800 block of East Street, according to a police affidavit filed with the charges.

“Officers exited the vehicle to see what was going on when the defendant, later identified as Jasean L. Fleming, exited the vehicle and took off on foot southbound behind the residence,” the affidavit says.

Officers gave chase and eventually caught up with him, the affidavit says. The officers returned to the women, the affidavit says, and were told that the three had been in the same car along with a baby.

They said the driver and Fleming got into an argument during which he demanded she pull the car over, but she refused.

“(The driver) advised at this time Mr. Fleming began to grab the wheel as she was driving, causing her to lose control of the vehicle while still in motion,” the report says.

The driver was able to pull the car safely to the curb, the report says.

A witness who was in the car said Fleming also grabbed the driver by her throat during the argument, the affidavit says.
