3 things to know: Urbana 7-year-old comes to school high on cocaine

An Urbana elementary student was high on cocaine when he came to school on Monday, police and school officials said.

Here are three things to know about the incident.

1. The student was displaying unusual symptoms

The school said the 7-year-old student was drowsy, groggy and was acting strange during lunch.

Precautions were taken to remove students and quarantine the student’s classroom until emergency crews could arrive.

Once they arrived at the hospital, it was determined that the substance in the student’s system was cocaine.

The student received treatment and has been released. The superintedent said he’s never experienced an incident like this in his time with the school.

2. Police said the mother is now facing charges

Police said when the mother arrived at the hospital, she was also under the influence of cocaine, meth, and fentanyl.

It’s likely that the student inhaled the drug before the beginning of the school day, based on treatment from the hospital.

The mother is currently in the Tri-County Jail and faces various felony charges.

3. The drug was most likely from a Springfield home

She said she and her child had been moving between various locations, but it was likely the student came into contact with the drug at a home in Springfield.

Champaign Children’s Services worked with the family to provide a safe place for the child to stay, and will assist police in the investigation.

Police said additional charges are possible.

It’s not known whether that student has returned to school since being released from the hospital.
