Trotwood ‘active shooter’ indicted on 19 felony counts

In a Trotwood active shooter incident Oct. 16, William Gibson has been indicted in Montgomery County for felonious assault on a police officer (10 counts); weapons under disability (six counts); and discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises (three counts).

He will be arraigned Oct. 26 and remains in jail.

The man accused of shooting at police in Trotwood on Friday faces several felony charges and had his bond set at $1.5 million, according to jail and court records. William D. Gibson, 42, had been suicidal, according to law enforcement.

Gibson tried to plead guilty Monday during his arraignment, but a magistrate judge in Montgomery County Municipal Court’s Western Division referred Gibson to the public defender’s office, according to court personnel.

A not guilty plea was entered on Gibson’s behalf.

The case will now go to a grand jury for possible indictment, according to court officials.

Gibson is being charged with six counts of felonious assault against a police officer, one count of felonious assault with a deadly weapon, one count of weapons under disability, one count of discharge of a firearm on or near a prohibited premises and one count of domestic violence, according to Montgomery County Municipal Court records. A charge for inducing panic was cleared, according to online jail records.

“The defendant fired gunshots at (6) T.P.D police officers and one Trotwood Fire/EMS member,” said an affidavit and statement of facts. “This occurred at 4645 Wolf Creek Pike, after his wife …was shot in the leg.

“She was shot after she got into a struggle with the defendant because he was suicidal. The gun went off striking her in the leg.”

At about 11:30 a.m. Friday, Gibson called 911 to say his wife accidentally shot herself in the leg. When police arrived and started treating his wife outside the residence, police said Gibson told them they had one minute to leave or he would start shooting.

Gibson fired a shot inside the residence at 4645 Wolf Creek Pike, according to Trotwood police Chief Eric Wilson, who said his officers then felt they were being targeted in what officials said was an active shooter situation. Gibson fired approximately 11 times, according to emergency scanner traffic.

Numerous agencies including multiple SWAT groups and the Dayton Bomb Squad responded after Trotwood officers dropped a “99” signal for additional assistance.

Gibson was booked into the Montgomery County Jail at 3:32 p.m. Friday. Gibson has previous felony convictions, including weapons charges and aggravated burglary, according to court records.

Family members of Gibson said he was distraught about a young family member who has cancer.
