Why are drones flying over local high schools?

Miami Valley schools are getting special security help.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is flying a drone over local schools, at the request of the district, to map their campus.

Today a BCI drone flew over West Liberty-Salem High School in Champaign County to help the district create its safety plan.

The school was the scene of a shooting that seriously injured one student last year.

The drone video gives first responders an up to date layout of the schools, their parking lots and the immediate neighborhood.

School districts traditionally use Google maps from the internet in their state mandated security plan, but those can be outdated if there is any new construction on campus.

BCI began the program in June and have two pilots to fly in the southern 44 counties of Ohio.
