“We sailed out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Saturday,” Tardiff told this news outlet, adding that she is traveling with her mother, who lives in Springboro, her aunt and her grandmother. “We were supposed to go to St. Kitts tomorrow (Friday), but it was canceled.”
Royal Caribbean informed the ship’s passengers that the trip would be altered to steer away from the path of Hurricane Irma.
“Our ship captain is taking us south and away from the storm,” Tardiff said. “However, there are 3,000 people on our ship who were expecting to fly home from Puerto Rico on Sunday so we are all wondering when and how we are going to get home.”
But Tardiff said she and others are thankful to be safe and it appears that they will avoid any collision with the hurricane, which registered winds of 185 mph on Thursday.
She said she does worry about the residents of the Caribbean islands in the storm’s path.
“So far the hardest part of dealing with the hurricane is having met so many nice people during our stay in Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and Curacao and hoping that they will be okay,” she said.
