Here's what Food Network had to say about it: "Graeter's in Cincinnati is home to the world's only French Pot Freezer. This old-fashioned machinery, plus the 18 percent butterfat content, makes their signature Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream dense and delicious — along with the combination of fresh black raspberry puree and bittersweet dark chocolate that's drizzled into the creamy, custard-like base."
Chip Graeter said film crews visited the production site and one of the company’s stores in Hyde Park. He said the other four shops on the list are mom-and-pop operations making ice cream one or two gallons at a time, the same way Graeter’s does. Cincinnati-based Graeter’s handpacks pints of ice cream using the French Pot process, but has national distribution in grocery chains such as Kroger’s, which is also headquartered in Cincinnati.
“We’re the biggest little guy is what we are,” Graeter said. “It cements our place in respect to having some of the best ice cream you can find in the country.”
The country’s best ice cream is made by Brooklyn, New York’s Ample Hills Creamery and is a salted chocolate called “It came from Gowanus,” according to Food Network.
Other Ohio companies recognized by the television series so far include Dayton's Pine Club for one of the best steaks; and Los Guachos Taqueria of Columbus for Top 5 best tacos.
Graeter's Ice Cream was founded in 1870 after the founders had success selling their French Pot churned ice cream in Cincinnati's street markets. Today, Graeter's has approximately 40 retail stores and ships more than 300,000 pints annually for online mail order sales. Graeter's can also be found in more than 6,000 grocery stores in 46 states, according to the company's website, graeters.com.
In celebration of National Ice Cream Month, Graeter’s is partnering with the mobile application taxi service Uber Technologies to deliver ice cream to your doorstep. The collaboration spans 13 cities nationwide including Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland, Akron and Toledo.
