Hotel worker killed: 5 other times guns were fired near the Dayton Mall

The deadly shooting of a hotel worker late Thursday night near the Dayton Mall was the latest crime involving guns around the Ohio 725/Interstate 75 interchange.

Miami Twp. police said a 17-year-old suspect was captured Friday in the homicide of Miami Twp. resident Jayren Graham, 19, who was shot outside the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel on Prestige Place where he worked.

Here are five other shootings near the interchange since 2017:

•RED ROOF INN FUGITIVE: In April, a Dayton man wanted by Indiana police was wounded after authorities said he pointed a loaded gun at Miamisburg police who were seeking to apprehend him outside the Red Roof Inn on Byers Road.

Jeremy Watson, 38, was shot by Miamisburg police officer Joshua Kohlrieser several times as local law enforcement was asked to assist Indiana authorities in capturing the suspect.

Watson was charged with robbery while armed with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon in connection to the April 2 robbery of a Dollar General in Bright, Ind., authorities there said.

Two Miamisburg officers responded. Kohlrieser fired at Watson after the suspect pointed a “fully-loaded” gun at him, authorities said.

The suburban Tactical Crime Suppression Unit – consisting of police from Centerville, Germantown, Kettering, Miamisburg, Moraine, Oakwood, Springboro and West Carrollton — responded to the scene. A grand jury did not indict Kohlrieser.

•TEEN ROBBERY SUSPECT: In February, a 17-year-old Miamisburg robbery suspect was wounded by an off-duty Miami Twp. police officer.

Charles Vincent Ashford, now 18 and facing multiple felony charges in adult court, was shot in the arm by Officer James Swearingen after authorities said the teen was fleeing a gas station robbery on Byers Road by attempting car jackings on Ohio 725 near I-75.

Police said Swearingen shot Ashford after the suspect failed comply with orders to drop his weapon at a confusing scene that attracted several law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Not guilty pleas have been entered for Ashford on seven counts of aggravated robbery, and one count each of discharging a firearm, impersonating a police officer and felonious assault. A grand jury did not indict Swearingen, saying he acted lawfully.

•HAWTHORN HOMICIDE: In July 2017, 32-year-old Lynsie Davis of Fairborn was killed by gunfire at Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham on Prestige Place in Miami Twp.

Mathew P. Glass, 35, of Beavercreek, is facing several charges in that case, including reckless homicide and negligent homicide, Montgomery County court records show.

A semiautomatic pistol, a rifle scope and hypodermic needles were among items police found at the hotel, authorities said.

A round of live ammunition and a spent gun shell were discovered along with five needles, a firearm and the weapon accessory after officers responded, according to police records.

A 911 caller told dispatchers a man was showing a gun to a woman when it went off inside the hotel room. Davis was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

•INCIDENT OUTSIDE SEARS: In May 2017, multiple shots were fired in what police described as a domestic dispute outside the Dayton Mall Sears.

The incident involved several gunshots being fired, possibly between 10 to 15 shots were fired, police said. A male victim was struck at least once in his lower leg, and the suspect had no visible injuries, police said.

Authorities arrested Jordana L. Esses, 48. She was booked in the Montgomery County Jail on a felonious assault charge.

But county court records do not show any charges against her.

•TASK FORCE SHOOTING: In January 2017, three men were arrested at Hawthorn Suites By Wyndam after an investigation by police that ended with officers shooting at the suspects, who allegedly tried to hit the police with their vehicle.

Those arrested were Shaun Hill, 27; Richard Benton, 28; Antwaun Brown, 31, and Darion Stargell, according to jail records.

Stargell was sentenced to a year for failure to comply with an officer.

Brown, the driver, was found not guilty of felonious assault on a police officer, court records show. Benton was convicted of obstructing official business, a charge that Hill continues to face in that case, according to court records.

A grand jury declined charges against three R.A.N.G.E. Task Force officers involved in this January shooting.
